Could You, Should You, Would You Share Your Home?

They’re baaaaack

A trend I have seen mentioned a lot is home sharing. It just shows how everything cycles around again. A century ago multi-generational households were common…what else would  you do with Grandma? Even when there was no family left for Grandma, the towns had ways of providing for the indigent…the Town Farm. This was a town-owned property where needy people were housed at town expense. Another way was for a person to bid on keeping an indigent person in their home, again, paid for by the town. This was a common solution until Social Security came along.

The new trend is part of the aging in place movement. In some cases everyone is related, such as elderly parents and adult children deciding to share one home. Some situations have “sandwiches” with the elderly parents and the returned young adults under the same roof with the middle aged parents. The baby boomers are getting creative, as usual, and buying homes together, ala “The Golden Girls”. No matter the situation, a lot of thought should go into the planning, not to mention legal advice.
